Fair Housing Program
REALTORS® move fair housing from aspiration to action one effort at a time.
The 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act was commemorated during the 2018 REALTORS® Legislative Meetings and Trade Expo. For REALTOR® Associations that are interested in hosting their own Fair Housing Act presentations, NAR is sharing materials used during NAR 360, General Session, and a special Fair Housing Reception that emphasize how “Fair Housing Makes Us Stronger.”
The pace of historic change can be at once laborious and swift. The passage of the U.S. Fair Housing Act in 1968 is a case in point.
On April 11, 1968, seven days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., President Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law. The Act states “It is the policy of the United States to provide, within constitutional limitations, for fair housing throughout the United States”, prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion and national origin.

This presentation took place on May 15, 2018 in Washington, DC.

- Sponsor a local Fair Housing Month poster contest. Afterward, make association calendars out of the artwork.
- Publish the REALTOR® Fair Housing Declaration and post it in your office and/or association.
- Use the Fair Housing Proclamation and have your local government proclaim April as Fair Housing Month.
- Display the 2017 Fair Housing Focus Poster in your office and/or association.
