In late December, the U.S. Census Bureau announced it would not be able to deliver a complete and accurate state population count for apportionment by the December 31, 2020 statutory deadline. The Bureau has announced that it plans to “deliver a complete and accurate state population count in early 2021.” The Count is expected to be complete by February 2021. The Bureau faced many challenges in meeting the statutory deadline and announced some issues regarding the data that needed to be corrected. The Bureau also has faced challenges in collecting and processing census data due to the covid-19 pandemic, and litigation regarding extending the census deadline.
