Homeownership is one of the biggest investments people make in their lifetime. The desire to own is the primary reason for purchasing a slice of the American Dream among 60 percent of first-time buyers, according to the 2011 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers.

Forty-two percent of first-time buyers reported that the primary reason for the timing of the purchase was that it was just the right time and they were ready to become homeowners. The second most common reason among 23 percent of all buyers was affordability. Housing affordability is at historic highs, prompting many buyers to get into the market.
