The National Association of REALTORS® found the U.S. housing market is short more than 300,000 affordable homes for middle-income buyers.

"There are simply not enough homes to house the growing population in America. And consequently, we are seeing a significant rise in rents over the past three years," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist with the National Association of REALTORS®.

"There's been underproduction for almost a decade. From 2010 to 2020 — right before Covid — we estimate that there is a roughly five million to six million housing-unit deficit in relation to the job creation that occurred in the country."
