At the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, a single historic home offers a powerful window into the evolving American dream of homeownership. Built in the 1760s in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and occupied by five families over more than 200 years, the house reflects how pivotal moments in U.S. history unfolded not only in public spaces, but within everyday homes. From the Revolutionary era to the civil rights movement, the exhibit traces how homeownership has symbolized stability, community and opportunity, even as access has shifted over time.
As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the NAR-sponsored exhibit invites visitors to reflect on the enduring importance of home—and the ongoing effort to expand that dream to more Americans.
