Throughout National Homeownership Month this June, the American Property Owners Alliance brought together policymakers, industry leaders and local communities to champion practical solutions that protect and expand the American dream of homeownership. Our efforts focused on advancing the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which became law earlier this month, while elevating the national conversation surrounding homeownership.
Punchbowl News' Future of Housing event was one of the highlights of the month. Sponsored by the Alliance, the half-day summit in Washington, D.C., convened congressional leaders, housing experts and industry stakeholders to discuss the future of America's housing market and the bipartisan solutions needed to address the nation's housing shortage.
Attendees heard from Rep. Mike Flood (R-Neb.), a lead champion of the ROAD to Housing Act, who voiced the importance of the bill and housing affordability more broadly:
“Housing was my issue in the campaign when I first came to Congress. I represent the First District of Nebraska. Let's take Columbus, Neb., for instance. The thriving industrial town of 25,000 people has 800 open jobs today, and the number one barrier to filling those jobs is a lack of housing. West Point, Neb., wants to hire a second-grade teacher. She wants to take the job, but she can't find a house. Some communities have like 1,300 people; there's one house for sale. Affordable housing for people who are working their tails off is important.”
Following Flood's remarks, the Alliance's executive director, Colin Allen, joined Punchbowl News co-founder and CEO Anna Palmer for a fireside chat. They discussed the momentum behind the legislation and why its comprehensive approach to increasing housing supply and expanding access to homeownership offers renewed optimism for the future of American housing policy.
The Alliance also continued its Unlocking Opportunity Tour with June events in Baltimore and New York. The tour, which has included five events so far in 2026, empowers individuals and families with the tools needed to navigate the path to homeownership, build financial stability, and create long-term wealth.
At the Alliance’s Baltimore event, community members gathered at Morning Star Baptist Church to hear from local financial and housing experts representing The Harbor Bank of Maryland, Realty ONE Group, Real Estate Brokers of Baltimore, and other community organizations.
At the New York event, the Alliance joined the Economic Empowerment Business Summit during the 100 Black Men of America National Conference, leading a panel on expanding access to homeownership and strengthening economic opportunity.
Throughout the month, the Alliance worked every day to protect and advance the American dream of homeownership. The Alliance team looks forward to carrying that mission forward through the rest of the year and continuing to advocate for policies that expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and help more Americans achieve the dream of owning a home.
