Buying and maintaining a home has become increasingly challenging for families across the country. In a recent Harris poll, 52% of Americans said their housing costs have increased over the last 12 months, underscoring the growing affordability pressures facing families nationwide and leaving homeownership increasingly out of reach for many.
Putting people on the path to homeownership and generational wealth is a key goal for the nonprofit American Property Owners Alliance. The Alliance has launched the Unlocking Opportunity Tour, a nationwide homeownership educational initiative aimed at providing American families with the tools and knowledge necessary to achieve sustainable homeownership.
The tour brings together housing and financial experts, community leaders and elected officials. Speakers discuss not only homeownership’s role in building and maintaining wealth but also the wealth gaps that have affected generations of Black families.
The Alliance made its most recent stop at the New Era Church in the heart of Indianapolis. In Indianapolis, according to the Pew Research Center (2023), the median wealth of white families is $178,500—10 times that of Black families ($17,100)—with much of that wealth tied to property ownership.
“We're here because we believe that homeownership creates strong, stable communities and provides individuals with a pathway to financial independence and security,” said the Alliance’s Executive Director Colin Allen. “Homeownership also enables, empowers and creates opportunities for homeowners to reinvest in their communities.”
Joined by LaRese Purnell, a partner with CLE Consulting Firm, Allen moderated a discussion on the housing gap for Black Americans in Indianapolis and the steps needed to bridge the divide. Panelists, including representatives from 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Homes Unlimited, Highgarden Real Estate, the Internal Revenue Service and CrossCountry Mortgage, shared practical insights on navigating the path to homeownership.
As part of the tour, the Alliance is also recognizing local leaders making a meaningful impact on homeownership in their communities. At the Indianapolis event, Brandon D. Cosby, CEO of Flanner House, a local nonprofit, received the Golden Key Award for his longstanding advocacy efforts and leadership in Indianapolis.
Flanner House is helping long-time Indianapolis residents remain in their homes and communities as their neighborhoods change.
“We created a homeowners initiative to be able to give folks in this neighborhood a way to be able to stay in this neighborhood,” Cosby said. “Accessibility is one thing. Affordability is something different. It's really time for generational wealth that should have existed in our community for generations.”
By bringing candid, solutions-driven conversations directly into communities where Black families have historically faced the greatest barriers to homeownership, the Alliance is helping turn awareness into action.
“Through the Unlocking Opportunity Tour, the Alliance is empowering families with the knowledge, resources and connections needed to create pathways to homeownership, strengthen communities and build generational wealth that can transform lives for decades to come.”
The Alliance brings the Unlocking Opportunity Tour to Detroit at the end of May and will share live updates on our social platforms: @OwnersAlliance on X and @propertyownersalliance on Instagram.
