White House

As the Senate prepares to hold a vote on the “One Big Beautiful Bill” tax legislation, the National Association of REALTORS® participated in a high-profile event at the White House to advocate for reforms that could shape the future of American housing and investment.

Shannon McGahn, NAR executive vice president and chief advocacy officer, joined President Donald Trump, members of his Cabinet, and key congressional leaders to weigh in on the tax reform package currently advancing through Congress.

The proposed legislation, still under negotiation, features several provisions critical to real estate. NAR has voiced strong support for the House-passed version of the bill, which includes an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), improvements to Opportunity Zones, preservation of the Mortgage Interest Deduction and Section 1031 like-kind exchanges, and a significant boost to the State and Local Tax Deduction (SALT) cap.

"These are pillars of American homeownership and investment," said McGahn, who was joined at the White House event by Ryan Rusbuldt, NAR director of government advocacy and operations. "We're working to ensure that any final legislation protects and strengthens the housing market for all Americans."

The event drew an influential crowd including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Cabinet members such as Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, Department of the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

McGahn and Rusbuldt took the opportunity to engage directly with these key policymakers, emphasizing NAR’s commitment to advancing tax policy that promotes homeownership and drives responsible development.

"NAR remains committed to ensuring that any tax reform legislation supports the real estate sector, protects homeowners, and strengthens communities," McGahn said. "We appreciate the opportunity to work directly with congressional and administration leaders as these critical discussions continue."

In the latest edition of the Advocacy Scoop podcast which published today, McGahn and NAR Vice President of Advocacy Communications and Outreach Patrick Newton discussed the importance of this event at the White House and the positive impact this legislation will have on real estate professionals and prospective homeowners who might benefit from a SALT increase or the LIHTC.

As the legislative process continues, NAR remains at the forefront of advocacy efforts—ensuring the voice of members is heard where it matters most: the halls of power in Washington.
