Creating a Ripple Effect
Justice Pang’s mother and grandmother nearly lost everything after they took out reverse mortgages on their properties. When the balloon payments came due, they couldn’t afford them. “My grandmother and mother almost lost their homes, and I was too young at the time to do anything to help,” says Pang, now 26.
So, Pang made a promise to herself that she, her future children and her elders would never endure such heartbreak again. As a real estate professional, she partners with other industry pros to provide free homeownership courses so that those in her community know exactly what it takes to be mortgage-ready. ”These classes are for everyone,” Pang says. “It doesn’t matter if they work with me or not. In fact, if they’re not, I want their agents to come along, too, because we can all learn together.”
Hawaii’s Big Island is “actually pretty small,” and everyone knows each other, Pang adds. That’s one reason it’s so important for her to do whatever she can to lift up the community. Residents, she says, are connected to each other in some way, and helping one person produces a ripple effect. Pang does that through financial literacy and helping make a path toward homeownership. ”If you’re better, I’m better—and the community is better. So, let’s get better together,” she says.
