FINAL REPORT

Work Group Purpose

To review current AEC program offerings for volunteer leaders and determine whether new or revised program offerings should be proposed to help prepare members for their volunteer leadership roles.

Background

The Volunteer Leadership Training Work Group reviewed and discussed AEC program offerings for volunteer leaders including the REALTOR® Leadership Program, Leadership Express, President Roundtables, Online Volunteer Leadership Resource and REALTORS® Excelling in Association Leadership Self-study Course. The group agreed these programs have value to volunteer leaders. Barriers to use include lack of time, cost (REALTOR® Leadership Program), lack of access (volunteers do not travel to NAR meetings) and lack of awareness.

A survey was sent to immediate past-presidents (2015 presidents) and association executives to determine training needs, training topics and delivery format. According to the survey, training should focus on the following topics:

  • Strategic planning
  • Roles of president/chief staff
  • Chairing/running meetings/parliamentary procedures
  • Evaluating chief staff performance
  • Public speaking

Based on the survey output, the work group agreed that volunteer leaders need additional training. One way to deliver training will be a monthly “Presidential Briefing” or resource email directed to volunteer leaders. Each briefing will focus on one main topic communicated in the form of short video vignettes, online resources and other offerings.

The work group drafted an annual calendar of topics and speakers for the new communication initiative. This new vehicle for local and state elected leaders, "Presidential Briefings: A monthly guide to your year in office," is designed to provide ongoing tips, tools, and resources to help prepare and support presidents and presidents-elect during their leadership terms. The briefing launched in August and was sent from President-elect Bill Brown with follow-up resources from the Leadership Summit. The September Briefing featured Doug Hinderer’s Summit presentation on strengthening the staff/volunteer partnership. The October briefing was a video on how to be an effective past president and transition the incoming president featuring Richard Caplan, past president of the Portland Metropolitan Association, OR, and the association’s Chief Operating Officer, Michele Holen. The November Briefing will showcase President Tom Salomone and his tips, strategies and insights for the president’s year in office in a video format. Future briefings, which may be online resources, videos, webinars, etc., will cover topics such as staff and volunteer roles, strategic planning, leadership transitions, chief staff performance appraisals, public speaking tips, and more.

Feedback from elected, volunteer and association executives has been extremely well received. International members will receive the briefings from 87 partner associations in 68 countries in the future.

Meeting Activity

The Volunteer Leadership Training Work Group reviewed and discussed a revised annual “Presidential Briefing” calendar that includes topics and potential speakers for a 12 month period (Appendix I). The briefings will go out monthly to local and state president and presidents-elect and AEs will be copied on the briefings.

In addition to reviewing the “Presidential Briefings”, the work group selected three speakers for the 2017 Leadership Express program at the REALTORS® Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in Washington, D.C. Nancy Friedman, Telephone Doctor, St. Louis, MO, will present “Golden Nuggets of Customer Service;” Ben Scheible, Esq, REALTOR®, Reno, NV, will present “Stay out of REALTOR® Jail;” and Ravi Hutheesing, RAVI Enterprises, Buckingham, VA, will present “Millennial Mojo.”
