The Leadership Academy is an eleven-month, six-session training and development program designed to foster and develop future NAR Leaders. Training sessions are structured around NAR national meetings.

Attendance at all sessions is necessary to graduate. Participants who have an unexcused absence for more than a full day of one session will be dropped from the program and encouraged to reapply. Selection for subsequent year's program cannot be guaranteed. Academy social events are for business networking, so please respect that invitations to Academy functions are intended for participants only, unless otherwise noted or approved.

Session 1: Welcome & NAR Governance Overview - Webinar

Wednesday, January 27, 2016 - Online

The first session starts with a Webinar in late January. During this session, the Chair & Vice Chair of the Advisory Group will welcome the new Academy members and provide a presentation on what to expect from the Academy's remaining sessions. This particular session will also provide a brief overview of the National Association's governing bodies and reporting structure. Session content will include the following:

  • What to Expect from the Leadership Academy (including upcoming session dates)
  • A "Welcome" video by members of the current Leadership Team (tentative)
  • Brief Intro into NAR Governance Process & Committee Structure (in preparation for March Recommendation Process opening)
  • Q&A

Session 2: Legislative & Advocacy Training

Wednesday - Thursday, March 30-31, 2016 - Washington, DC (Guests arrive 3/29)

During this Session in late March, the Leadership Academy will have a one and a half day overview on how NAR builds relationships with member of Congress and Federal Regulatory agencies to influence policy makers and achieve success. This session will also introduce the Academy class project. Session content will include the following:

  • Business Leaders as Effective Legislative Advocates
  • Leveraging REALTOR® Relationships: How NAR Influences Federal Policy Makers
  • Economic Update
  • Research Products for REALTORS®
  • REALTOR® Party Training: What it Takes to be a Leader
  • The Voice for Real Estate: Media Relations for REALTOR Leaders
  • Effective Communication Through Social Media
  • Introduction of Class / Individual Project

Session 3: Preserve & Protect: Bringing Our Message to the Hill

Monday, May 9, 2016 - Washington, DC

This session is held during the Legislative Meetings in May and will focus on the work of the Federal Political Coordinators and their relationships with the members of Congress. Session content will include the following:

  • Federal Political Coordinators: Building Trust with Members of Congress
  • NAR's Virtual Town Hall
  • Getting Involved….Taking Action!

Session 4: Lead By Example: Understanding the Principles of Leadership

Wednesday - Thursday, June 29-30, 2016 - Chicago, IL (Guests arrive 6/28)

In this June session, the Academy will learn how NAR leads the industry as it relates to Global Real Estate, Law, Ethics & Policy and Publications (REALTOR Mag, etc.). Academy participants will take part in workshops, meet key NAR staff, and learn of new NAR initiatives. This session will also discuss available resources and educational tools to assist in building a strong and viable expertise profile. Session content will include the following:

  • Leadership in Global Real Estate
  • NAR Publications: Managing Our Message
  • Law, Ethics & Policy
  • REALTOR Professionalism: NAR Code of Ethics / Excellence
  • Seeking NAR Leaders: Building Your Expertise Profile
  • Discussion of Class / Individual Project

Session 5: Fundamentals of Leadership (Video Conference)

This session will provide a presentation from two former NAR Leaders who share their path to leadership with all its challenges to balance duties with goals and expectations. Session content will include the following:

Session 6: Bringing it All Together

Wednesday, November 2, 2016 - Orlando, FL

This half day session during the REALTOR Conference in November will close with a recap of the previous sessions and will include a presentation from a former NAR Past President. The class will also have an opportunity to present what they have learned from the Academy sessions in addition to their final Class / Individual Project(s). Session content will include the following:

  • Leadership Lessons
  • Presentation of Academy Class Project
  • Reception and Graduation following meeting
