NAR, along with representatives from four local REALTOR® Associations, met with White House and Department of Labor officials Wednesday afternoon to discuss industry’s strong support for the Association Health Plan (AHP) rule. The AHP rule faced a recent setback with the litigation before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The roundtable meeting was a chance for stakeholders, policy experts, and state insurance regulators to discuss the strategy on defending and protecting AHPs in light of that legal uncertainty.
NAR staff was joined by the Association Executives and CEOs of the Tennessee REALTORS®, the Greater Las Vegas Association of REALTORS®, the Nevada REALTORS®, and the Baldwin County Association of REALTORS® in Alabama. All stressed the importance of protecting the ability of working owners (independent contractors) to participate in AHPs, highlighting the many benefits of the plans operating in these areas. To date, over 3,000 REALTORS® and their families have found cost-effective health insurance solutions through these local AHP options.
The meeting comes on the heels of NAR’s call for the Justice Department to defend the Department of Labor’s regulatory authority to support AHPs in the litigation. While federal progress is stalled due to the litigation, NAR is focusing on supporting state and local efforts to adopt AHPs, such as seeking clarity from state insurance regulators on their treatment of AHPs.
