NAR Comments to Appraiser Qualifications Board

On June 16, 2016, NAR sent a letter to the Appraiser Qualifications Board. The letter was in response to the Appraiser Qualifications Board’s (AQB) First Exposure Draft – Proposed Changes to the Real Property Appraiser Qualification Criteria. The AQB incorporated into this Exposure Draft changes advocated by NAR in our March 2016 and September 2015 letters, written in response to the related AQB Discussion Draft and White Paper.

Among the proposed changes, the Exposure Draft replaces the requirement for a four-year degree to become a licensed residential appraiser with various ways to demonstrate a knowledge and skills requirement, including the use of College Level Placement Exams.  The AQB also proposes to allow for certain experience in other fields to count towards 50% of the experience required for appraisal licensure or certification. NAR agrees with these and other proposed changes, but also urges the AQB to allow certain real estate related work experience to count towards the four-year degree requirement and expand the types of experience from other fields for the experience requirement.
