Robot mowers have come a long way from the early models that required boundary wires, frequent intervention and plenty of patience. The category has matured quickly, and after testing 15 models over the past two years, I’ve reached a point I don’t get to often with anything that comes with a battery and an app: I’d recommend a robot mower for most people.
Five new machines came through my yard this season: the Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD, Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO, Worx Landroid Vision Cloud 4WD, Anthbot Genie and MOVA LiDAX Ultra 2000. Two more, Yarbo and Segway Navimow, stayed on my list from last year for long-term testing. That puts me at 15 robot mowers tested on my own property through real Minnesota conditions.
Here's why it matters to you: A robot mower used to be a smart-home curiosity you'd point out on a showing. When a buyer stands in a half-acre backyard and wonders who is going to take care of all this, a robot mower is a viable solution.
Navigation Is Where the Real Progress Happened
Last year, the story was that these mowers had escaped the boundary wire. This year, the good ones no longer depend on any single sensor to know where they are.
Network RTK, for example, can eliminate the need to install a base station in the yard by pulling positioning data from existing reference stations. LiDAR uses laser mapping to help mowers navigate under tree cover and alongside homes where satellite signals can struggle. Cameras can spot unexpected obstacles, such as a garden hose, dog toy or person.
The best machines combine these technologies. The LUBA 3 AWD layers LiDAR, network RTK and AI vision, and you can feel the difference when you watch it work. That redundancy is the biggest reason this year's machines felt more dependable than last year's.
If a property has significant tree cover, steer your client away from a mower that relies on RTK alone. LiDAR or camera vision can fill the gap when satellite signals are blocked or degraded.
Edges Are Still the Unsolved Problem
Every machine does beautiful work in the open and then faces the same challenge at the perimeter: fence lines, garden beds, posts and tight corners.
Companies are tackling the problem differently. The Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO has a side-mounted string trimmer that deploys during mowing. Worx gets its cutting deck closer to the border. Segway offers a trimmer attachment, but for safety, the user must remain within Bluetooth range and hold a button in the app while it operates.
On a simple lawn with clean borders, these solutions can get close enough that most homeowners would call the job finished. On my yard, with a fence, garden beds and tight corners, none eliminated hand trimming entirely.
That's still meaningful progress. Just set expectations with clients upfront. Knowing they'll occasionally need a string trimmer can be the difference between a homeowner who's delighted and one who feels oversold.
Recommend All-Wheel Drive Whenever You Can
If I could give a homeowner one piece of buying advice, this would be it.
Many robot mowers are rear-wheel drive with caster wheels up front. On flat turf, that's fine. On grades and uneven ground, they can get stuck, fail to redock or spin their wheels and damage the grass.
That's what I encountered with the standard MOVA LiDAX Ultra 2000. Its LiDAR mapping and setup were good, and MOVA sells an AWD version designed to address that weakness, although I haven't tested it.
By comparison, the LUBA 3 AWD never got stuck during my testing on a property with real elevation changes. Unless the lawn is genuinely flat and simple, recommend your clients spend the extra money on all-wheel drive.
Setup and Price Finally Make Sense for Many Homeowners
Entry-level machines now start under $1,000, compared with a roughly $2,500 floor a few years ago. Strong mid-range models generally run about $2,000 to $3,000, with features such as LiDAR, multisensor navigation and all-wheel drive available.
Setup has improved, too. Most of this year's machines had me mapped and mowing within an hour or two.
At $40 to $60 a mow, professional lawn service can easily run past $2,000 a season, making the upfront investment easier to justify for some homeowners. Frequent firmware updates can also improve a mower after purchase.
Matching the Machine to the Yard
- Mammotion LUBA 3 AWD: This mower is my favorite of the year and where I'd start for most people. It combines LiDAR, network RTK, AI vision and all-wheel drive. It handled hills and uneven ground better than anything else I tested and redocked reliably.
- Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO: Dual LiDAR navigation performs well under tree cover, setup is easy and the TruEdge trimmer helps with borders. Its rear-wheel-drive design makes it a better match for reasonably level ground.
- Anthbot Genie: This is a sensible small-yard option with the fastest setup of anything I tested this season. Because it relies on RTK, it's best suited to a level, open lawn.
- Yarbo: Built for large properties and rough terrain, its modular platform can also become a leaf blower or snow thrower, giving it an all-season advantage in colder climates.
- Segway Navimow: After two seasons of testing, its hybrid navigation remains dependable and the lineup now starts under $1,000.
Takeaways for Agents
Last year, I'd have called a robot mower a nice smart-home talking point. This year, it's a practical answer to a real objection you might face in the field.
When a buyer hesitates over a big lot, or a seller worries that a sprawling yard looks like a maintenance burden, today's robot mowers give you something concrete to offer. Options start under $1,000, setup can take just an afternoon and the technology can keep a lawn cut without the homeowner giving up every Saturday.
Knowing how to match the mower to the property is what makes that information useful: Consider tree cover when evaluating navigation technology, and recommend all-wheel drive when a yard has meaningful slopes or uneven terrain.
A wide, open yard used to be a chore you had to talk around. Today's robot mowers won't eliminate every bit of lawn maintenance, but they've progressed enough to change that conversation.
