The National Association of REALTORS® aims to become a leader in real estate sustainability by championing programs and legislation that promote the many facets of sustainability in real estate, from energy-efficient appliances and solar panels to smart growth and better public transportation.

Home buyers’ interest in sustainability is growing. In the “REALTORS® and Sustainability 2017 Report,” released in April, 71 percent of REALTORS® said that promoting energy efficiency in their listings is important, and 60 percent perceived that consumers had at least some interest in sustainability factors.

NAR hosted the 2017 Sustainability Summit in Washington, D.C., in July, where President-elect Elizabeth Mendenhall said REALTORS® and consumers have been showing an increasing desire for sustainability and energy-efficient features in their homes as awareness about these offerings grows.

More MLSs are including data fields highlighting green features such as LED lighting, smart thermostats, and green home certifications.

 

Energy consumption estimates for millions of homes nationwide are now available at NAR’s Realtors Property Resource®, the largest comprehensive database of property information in the industry. The energy consumption data (provided by Tendril) gives you estimated monthly energy costs, an energy score, and a home energy consumption breakdown for heating, lighting, electronics, and other categories of home energy use.

Amplify Your Influence

Voicing your views on local, state, and national legislative and regulatory real estate issues will be easier than ever through new advocacy technology and services from the National Association of REALTORS®. Beginning in 2018, you’ll respond to calls for action that you receive via email, text message, or social media through a new user-friendly online system. NAR expects its new program, Advocacy Everywhere, to expand REALTORS®’ influence on public policy at the local, state, and federal level by empowering members and consumers to quickly and easily take action.
