A Storied Career
As a journalism student in 2016, Samantha Witherwax had the great fortune to cover the president’s State of the Union speech as well as the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She couldn’t have predicted it, but the storytelling skills she was honing then would one day turbocharge her real estate career.
“Telling stories is how I connect with people,” says Witherwax, 27. Most weeks, she selects a listing in her market and, with the agent’s and owner’s permission, creates a video for her Home of the Week Instagram video series. Her strategy is to showcase a range of properties at particular price points. “I want people to see how much house they could get in one part of town versus another,” she says. She produces about six home stories at a given price point before moving up in $100,000 increments. Since November 2020, she has produced more than 100 videos, featuring homes in the $300,000 to $1 million range. The series accounts for most of her business leads.
Witherwax has an affinity for working with buyers. “I feel like I’m in the fight with them,” she says. “It’s very rewarding.” So far she’s had only one transaction involving a Home of the Week property—and the buyer was Witherwax. “It’s a cute four-bedroom ranch in a great location. But it needed TLC.” Becoming a first-time homeowner in May 2022 increased her empathy with buyers. “It’s nice for people to know that the person guiding them through their purchase has recently gone through it, too.”
