Are the classes online or in the classroom?

Courses can be taken either in person, online, or a combination of both. We recommended taking courses in person if possible since this is a great time to network with other future CIPS designees with the additional benefit of a live instructor.

How long does it take online?

Each course is designed to be a full-day (8 hours) course, however online courses are self-paced and can be started and stopped based on your preferences. Allow 6-8 hours of screen time. Once the course is purchased, students have one year to complete the coursework and pass the exam.

How long does it take in the classroom?

Each course is 8 hours long and will total 40 hours by the end of the 5 courses.

Do I have to take a test?

At the end of each class (both online and in the classroom) you will take a test covering the course content, for a total of 5 tests. Each test must be passed with a 80 percent or better in the classroom and 70 percent or better on-line. There are no additional tests required to earn your CIPS designation.

I took the classes a few years ago, are they still valid?

Any courses completed more than 3 years prior to the submission of your application must be retaken to receive credit towards the education requirement of the designation.


What is the application cost?

The one-time application fee is $75. Your application must be accompanied by payment for your application fee and membership dues. Payments are accepted in the form of an authorized credit card payment or check. Payments by credit card can be paid through the NAR Ecommerce System:

Are there any additional fees other than course fees and the application fee? 

As a CIPS Designee you’ll be required to pay annual membership dues. Please see the “Dues” section below for more information.

How can I submit my application? 

Once you’ve provided payment, you may then submit your application to NAR. You can email your application to or print and mail it to the address below. You’ll receive an email confirmation once your application is received.

In addition to the required coursework, how much experience do you need to apply?

In addition to the required coursework you will need 100 experience points to apply. The application includes several categories measuring your international competency. Each option is given a specific number of points. While you are not required to fill in each area, responses you provide must total 100 points.

How do you earn the 100 experience points?

There are many ways to earn experience points. Experience points can be obtained through a completed international transaction, having earned other NAR designations or certifications, being a member of your local or state global business council, being an approved instructor, having obtained a college degree, working or studying abroad, participating in a REALTOR Association sponsored Trade Mission, attending conventions outside of your country, being a published author of international content and many more. When do I need to submit the application to be recognized at the NAR conferences?

New CIPS designees are pinned twice per year. Once in May at the REALTORS Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo Global Networking Reception and once at the REALTORS Conference and Expo at the CIPS breakfast in November. Applications must be submitted no later than March 31 to be recognized at the REALTORS Legislative Meetings & Trade Expo in May and September 30 to be recognized at the REALTORS Conference and Expo in November.

When should I expect to hear back about my application? 

Due to the volume of applications NAR receives, it can take 2 to 4 weeks for your application to be reviewed. If NAR requires any other information to approve your application, you’ll be notified by email as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience during the review process.


How much are CIPS dues? 

As a CIPS Designee you’ll be required to pay annual membership dues in the amount of $198 to keep your designation active. This discounted rate is available on-line only and must be paid by December 31st.

How often do I need to pay my CIPS dues? 

CIPS membership dues are paid annually. Dues renewal notices are sent starting in November. Be sure to remit your payment before January 1 each year to avoid paying the 10% late fee. You must pay your dues to use the CIPS designation and receive your CIPS member benefits.

How do I submit my dues payment?

I haven’t paid my dues in a few years, can I reactivate my membership? 

Yes, you will need to pay a reactivation fee of $50 in addition to your dues. Dues are prorated depending on what time of the year you join. The prorated dues schedule is as follows:

Quarter 1- January, February, March $220
Quarter 2- April, May, June $165
Quarter 3- July, August, September $110
Quarter 4- October, November, December PLUS following year $220

If you earned the CIPS Designation and you haven’t paid membership dues in over 5 years you must:

  1. Take the CIPS Core Course - Global Real Estate: Transaction Tools
  2. One additional CIPS course (no substitutions of CRS, AHWD or CCIM course allowed)
  3. Resubmit the CIPS Designation Application
  4. Submit payment for the current quarter’s dues and the application fee
