The Most Popular Design Styles in Each State

Find out which style is the favorite in your home state.

Modern interior design reigns as the most popular home style in 32 states, according to a new study from Confused.com, a home comparison site. Modern interior design is characterized by a monochromatic color palette, clean lines, minimalism and natural finishes.

“Modern never goes out of style,” Jacqueline Hamilton, an expert at Seaforde Interiors, told Confused.com. “Sleek lines and clutter-less rooms make it an easy and functional way to live. Its appeal is across the board.”

While modern styles remain popular, many homeowners are adding more individualized imprints to their design by accessorizing with antiques, incorporating wallpaper and experimenting with color and bolder statements.

The Confused.com study, which tracked Google searches nationwide to find the most popular home styles, also shows the enduring popularity of farmhouse—even as more designers call for it to go. In 14 states, “farmhouse interior design” surfaced as the most popular Google search in home styles. The relaxed design relies on more natural materials, which may offer a familiarity and comfort to homeowners.
