The 'Little Black Dress' of Home Design?

All-white interiors are getting some black contrasts for a modern refresh.

Like a wardrobe accessory, a little splash of black also can be an instant way to elevate your property’s style. Black-and-white color schemes are trending in home design, and black accents are appearing in home finishes as well as accent walls—or even ceilings.

Home stager Krisztina Bell, founder of No Vacancy Home Staging and Virtually Staging Properties in the Atlanta area, says she’s using black more in the properties she’s staging. It can be a more daring choice, particularly when paired with lighter colors, but it can have a big payoff in the design of the space, she says.

“I love that black is being used as an accent color to create some contrast and pop as we take a break from the grays,” Bell says. “Black can be elegant, chic, dramatic, and an expression of minimalism.”

Bell recently staged a red-brick Bungalow home using black as an accent throughout. The home featured black-and-white flooring in the bathroom, a high-gloss black paint on the ceiling of the bedroom, and black molding to dress up an otherwise white wall behind the bed frame. The home also had black-painted doors and subtle touches throughout that layered in black, including kitchen cabinet pulls, tile, and lighting fixtures.
