Swimming pools can serve as a centerpiece to a backyard and promote an inviting outdoor lifestyle. But even pools follow design trends.
Large, rectangular pools with a deep-end and diving board or slide were once a common pool feature. But “these structures have fallen out of favor due to insurance challenges,” says Jeffrey Fagan, president of the Orlando Regional REALTOR® Association. “Newer pools trend toward shallower and more decorative with organic shapes and landscaping style features.”
Pools certainly can be a selling point in warmer climate markets. In Orlando, for example, homes with a private pool sold for a median price of $336,600 compared to the median price of $225,000 for homes without one, Fagan says. But he also notes buyers and homeowners are jumping in cautiously to pool ownership, factoring in the added maintenance costs, safety, and return on investment. Fagan always tells clients to own a pool for enjoyment and not necessarily for the belief that it will cause your home to appreciate faster.
For those with a pool, here are some ways they’re creating pool envy, according to pool manufacturers such as Platinum Pools and Aquavisions:
Dark interior pools
White and light blue pools have long been a favorite, but darker interior pool finishes are trending. Up against surrounding rocks and a natural waterfall, these darker pools give the appearance of a lagoon. Darker pools offer some distinct benefits too: They’re better at retaining heat, which can help lower pool heating costs. Also, they are less likely to show dirt than pools with lighter finishes.
Fire and water
Fire pits are a common backyard features, and they’re popping up near pools, too. “When you add fire and water features to your oasis, you are giving beauty and excitement to your pool and your backyard,” according to Houston-based custom pool builder Platinum Pools 2019 pool trends report.
Smart lighting
A growing trend is the use of smart lighting within and around a pool. The smart lighting allows homeowners to illuminate their pool with multiple colors as well as adjust the brightness. Lighting can be customized day-to-day, controlled through an app on the phone, and mixed with a variety of color options.
Tanning ledges inside the pool
Pools are getting shallower. Large ledges inside the pool, in about a foot of water, are gaining popularity. These are called tanning shelves. They can be great for children and pets since they’re shallower spots than a typical pool depth. But homes with tanning ledges can be staged by placing a cozy lounge chair inside the pool to show it off as a spot to relax in the water.
Safety fences
Interest in safety fences that protect children and pets is growing. A fence that hugs the edge of a pool, however, may block the views of those inside the house and those outside in the yard. Safety fences don’t have to be an eyesore. Consider fences that are all-glass, rather than black mesh to promote safety and visibility.
