In 2024, the MIBOR REALTOR® Association received a level one placemaking grant from the National Association of REALTORS® to partner with the Blue River Community Foundation in Shelby County, Indiana, in order to support the Goin’ on a Bear Hunt project—an initiative that brings public art to life across the county. What began as a temporary pop-up installation has now become a permanent part of the Shelby County landscape.

Inspired by the classic 1901 children’s book "Bears of Blue River" by Charles Major, the Goin’ on a Bear Hunt project adds a creative and nostalgic twist to public art. The initiative features six fiberglass bear sculptures, each uniquely designed and painted by local artists to reflect the character and charm of their communities. These whimsical bears now stand proudly at key locations throughout Shelby County, offering residents and visitors an interactive way to explore local landmarks and celebrate Hoosier heritage.

Before the bears found their permanent homes, they made special appearances at several community hubs, including the Blue River Community Foundation, the Shelby County Tourism and Visitors Bureau, and the Shelby County Fair. These pop-up stops generated excitement and engagement as anticipation built for the official unveiling of their permanent locations.

MIBOR members had a chance to view the full collection of bears during a Coffee, Connections & Community Impact event hosted at the Shelby County Tourism and Visitors Bureau. The event was used to show off previous investments made in Shelby County through MIBOR’s own grant program: the MIBOR Community Impact Initiative. At the event, members not only explored the Goin’ on a Bear Hunt project but were also able to connect with local elected officials and nonprofit leaders who partner with MIBOR. MIBOR’s Community Impact Initiative is a grant program that supports organizations and initiatives that build and maintain inclusive and vibrant communities; attract, develop and retain a skilled regional workforce; and work towards attracting and retaining quality jobs for Central Indiana—with the goal of making Central Indiana the best region in the country for people to live, work, play and invest. The Goin’ on a Bear Hunt project is a shining example of how public art can enrich a community’s identity and create a sense of place.

Thanks to the overwhelming community support, the six bears now reside in their permanent homes:

  • Shelby Mills River Deck (Shelbyville)
  • Meltzer Woods – Liberty Township Schoolhouse No. 2 (Shelbyville)
  • Blue River Memorial Park – Fishing Pier (Shelbyville)
  • Morristown Community Park (Morristown)
  • Flat Rock Community Park (Flat Rock)
  • Fairland Community Park (Fairland)
  • Geneva United Methodist Church (Flat Rock)

These installations encourage locals and visitors alike to embark on their own “bear hunt”—discovering art, exploring new places, and celebrating the creative spirit that makes Shelby County unique.
