The National Association of REALTORS® on Monday applauded the U.S. Senate’s confirmation of Lori Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor.
Although NAR doesn’t comment on every cabinet appointment, the Department of Labor plays a key role in real estate markets for several reasons. At the most fundamental level, strong labor markets fuel real estate sales and leasing. In addition, the industry will look to Chavez-DeRemer and the DOL for leadership on policies and programs to ensure an adequate supply of skilled workers to address the nation’s massive housing shortage. And whether they’re brokers operating a business that employs people, employees of a real estate company or independent contractors, NAR members need the department to provide “clarity, predictability and consistency for American businesses and workers,” NAR said in a Feb. 7 letter to Sen. Bill Cassidy (R.-La.), chair of the Health, Education Labor and Pensions Committee, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I.-Vt.), ranking member of the committee.
A Leader and an Entrepreneur
“As a small business owner, former mayor, and former member of Congress, Ms. Chavez-DeRemer is uniquely positioned to understand complex issues facing many workers, businesses and industries,” says NAR Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy Officer Shannon McGahn.

Chavez-DeRemer served as a member of Congress in Oregon’s 5th Congressional District from 2023 to 2025. Before winning her Congressional seat, she served two terms as mayor of Happy Valley, Ore., a suburb of Portland.
More than a decade ago, Chavez-DeRemer and her husband, Dr. Shawn DeRemer, founded a business that provides anesthesia services to hospitals, surgery centers and clinics. She holds a degree in business administration from California State University, Fresno.
Focus on Housing, Workers and Businesses
“NAR is eager to work with Ms. Chavez-DeRemer on key issues that impact the housing industry and the broader economy,” McGahn says. “Ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of workers while also protecting the interests of small businesses must remain a priority for Ms. Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary.”
