A Helping Hand
Giving back to the community is just part of day-to-day business for Abigail Shechter. She donates 10% of her commission from every sale to a charity of her client’s choosing. Shechter, 27, also co-founded the Furnitshare Foundation, a nonprofit that distributes gently used furniture to those in need. The nonprofit, which is run by Shechter and her broker, receives donations from sellers who can’t take their furniture with them. The foundation has helped more than 100 people so far. “We can help with everything that makes a house a home,” she says.
In addition, Shechter works part time as a direct support counselor with Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services, a group home for individuals with developmental disabilities. Shechter administers medication and assists residents with their daily needs. The ebullient Shechter also regularly updates her Instagram with humorous videos on the homebuying process, is an active Young Professionals Network member, and sits on two of her local association’s committees.
Part of her real estate business includes advising area developers who wish to appeal to the local Orthodox Jewish community, which counts her as a member. “I tell them a kosher kitchen needs two ovens and three sinks. And they need a bedroom on the first floor for the in-laws,” says Shechter. “I add design ideas that will add to the resale value.”
