The most popular kitchen backsplash in 2022 is slab—which can make the wall seem like a vertical extension of your countertop, according to designers recently surveyed by Fixr, a home improvement website. The site recently released its “2022 Backsplash Trends” report.

These slab backsplashes may be an extension of a marble or quartz countertop. It creates a cohesive look in the kitchen. Also, since the backsplash and countertop are the same material, it can trick the eye and make a kitchen appear larger. There are fewer seams and no grout lines, which also gives the kitchen a cleaner appearance, designers say.

MacKenzie Cain, interior designer at Habitar Design, told Fixr this is one of her favorite backsplash styles. “Extending the countertop up the backsplash, whether that is natural marble or engineered quartz, is such a clean and luxurious look,” she says.

Garrison Hullinger, president of Garrison Hullinger Interior Design, says that if the cabinets and hardware are the stars of the kitchen design, then a slab backsplash can help achieve a cleaner aesthetic by adding to the background without stealing the show.

But this look isn’t cheap. It’s pricier than most backsplashes, like subway tiles. The average cost for this project is between $1,500 to $4,500 depending on the material you choose, according to Fixr’s price guides.
