Bathroom Renovation Ideas From Top Designers

Aiming for added drama, the latest remodeling trends are bold.

Bathroom renovations are among the most valuable home improvement projects your clients can undertake. A midrange bathroom remodel can return up to 57% of the investment at the time of resale, according to the National Association of REALTORS®’ 2019 Remodeling Impact Report. REALTORS® also cite remodeled bathrooms as one of the top selling points to home buyers.

Interior designers and bathroom renovation experts offer their best tips and tricks for creating a bathroom oasis.

Go Bold With More Color

“Don’t shy away from color and pattern. While your bathroom should be an oasis and place of comfort, that doesn’t mean you can’t explore color, wallpaper, and playful design elements.” —Mary Patton, Mary Patton Design, Houston

Add Some Pizzazz With Wallpaper

“One of my favorite ways to make a bold statement in a bathroom is to incorporate fun wall coverings. The secret to making a successful wallpaper statement, though, is keeping everything else simple. Vanities, mirrors, and light fixtures should not be competing for attention. When done right, it can make a great first impression.” –Brittany Farinas, House of One Design Studio, Miami

Make the Vanity Functional

“Your vanities are so important! When refreshing your bathroom, the vanity can be a place of organization and function while also playing into the beautiful design of the space. Additionally, swapping out a vanity doesn’t have to take too much effort or time, but it can make a massive impact.” —Mel Bean, Mel Bean Interiors, Tulsa, Okla.

Double the Shower

“Double showers are a must! We often recommend double showers with rain heads, hand-held features, and multiple faucets to create a truly relaxing experience. Another option is adding a body sprayer, which we will customize to the customer’s height so it hits perfectly. A mistake people make in their bathrooms is installing their showerheads too far from each other. A good rule of thumb would be to position them roughly one foot away from one another. Another popular addition is technology that allows everything to be controlled from your phone or an iPad on the wall.” –Joseph Tsedaka, principal at NOMI, Dallas
