Nestled in the heart of downtown Union, Missouri, a vibrant new green-space is taking root—Hansen Park: a project that blends local history, community engagement, and thoughtful urban design. At its core, this park honors the legacy of Robert Hansen, a beloved 1976 board president of the Franklin County Board of REALTORS® and REALTOR® turned long-time affiliate member for Hansen Title. Robert was also the son of the organization’s founding president, making the space not just a park, but a living tribute to a family that helped shape the community.

Hansen Park sits at a highly visible corner, just a block from the county courthouse, surrounded by law offices, shops and restaurants. What was once a vacant lot—formerly housing old law offices, owned by Mr. Hansen himself—now is being transformed into a welcoming, multi-use public destination. The site’s transformation from construction zone to community centerpiece symbolizes the revitalization that thoughtful placemaking can bring to a downtown center.

The Franklin County Board of REALTORS® is proud to play a central role in this transformation. Led by 2024 Board President Bob Borgmann, the board has worked closely with the city of Union and the Hansen family estate to guide the development of the park, with a special focus on creating spaces for community connection. One key addition being spearheaded by the board’s Advocacy Committee is a shaded pergola in the front corner of the park, complete with a picnic table. This feature will provide covered seating for visitors to enjoy outdoor lunches, social gatherings, and local concerts on the park’s fully equipped performance stage.

Accessibility has been a cornerstone of the park’s design. The entire area will be ADA-compliant, with welcoming pathways and ramps ensuring that all community members—regardless of age or ability—can enjoy what the park has to offer. With ample street parking, walkable access, and nearby bike trails, the park will be a convenient and inclusive destination for families, workers and visitors alike.

The park’s design also includes a central fountain and a striking bronze horse statue once owned by Mr. Hansen, offering a visually appealing landmark and a nod to local heritage. Native trees and pollinator-friendly plants will bring shade and color, while supporting natural variety in Union’s growing town square.

Beyond beauty and function, this space is a catalyst for connection. With a shaded stage and flexible open space, Hansen Park is poised to become a hub for concerts, farmers markets, community celebrations, and spontaneous gatherings. Parks like this provide far more than just green space—they create opportunities for shared experience and civic pride.

Thanks to funding from the Bob Hansen estate and ongoing maintenance by the city of Union, this project is built with long-term sustainability in mind. The board of REALTORS®’ leadership ensures that this isn’t just a tribute, but a vibrant and thriving enhancement to the livability of downtown Union.

In honoring the past and investing in the future, the Hansen Park project embodies the spirit of community revitalization and serves as a powerful reminder of the role REALTORS® can play in building spaces that bring people together.
