Downpayment Among Those Who Recently Purchased A Home, By U.S. Subregion

  • Nationwide the typical downpayment among those who recently purchased a home is 8 percent. However, among subregions in the U.S. there is variation.
  • Those in the subregion of East South Central (WI, MI, IL, IN, OH) had the lowest downpayment of 5 percent and financed 95 percent of their recent home purchase.
  • Those in the Middle Atlantic states (NY, PA, NJ) had the highest downpayments of 12 percent and financed 88 percent of their recent home purchase.
  • 19 percent of buyers in the Mountain states (MT, ID, WY, NV, UT, CO, AZ, NM) financed 100 percent of their home purchase.
