Democrats and Republicans alike called for a solution to the U.S. housing crisis and repeatedly stressed the urgency of building up housing inventory during a Thursday morning Senate confirmation hearing for Scott Turner, the former NFL player who is President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The real estate industry has signaled strong support for Turner to become HUD secretary. In a letter addressed to Sens. Scott and Warren, a coalition of organizations including the Mortgage Bankers Association, the National Association of Home Builders and the National Association of REALTORS® urged the lawmakers to move quickly with Turner’s nomination.

“Mr. Turner understands the value of strengthening public-private partnerships and collaborating with stakeholders to expand the supply of housing,” the groups said in a letter. “Equally important, he is passionate about the need to target investment to traditionally underserved communities.”
