Rep. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican who's weighing a gubernatorial run, made news at POLITICO Playbook’s First 100 Days: Tax Reform event, saying that he wouldn’t back a tax bill that doesn’t lift the cap on state and local tax deductions.

As blue state Republicans push for higher SALT deductions, the National Association of REALTORS® is shrugging off the possibility that GOP policymakers could use the mortgage interest deduction to pay for extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts.

"When it comes to the reconciliation process, there are dozens of options of what is a budgetary possibility," NAR Chief Advocacy Officer Shannon McGahn told Katy O’Donnell. "However, given the sharp focus the Trump administration and members on both sides of the aisle in Congress have placed on housing costs and supply, including [the state and local tax deduction], that reduces the probability of raising taxes on homeowners as part of those efforts."
