The Incomparable Venus Williams

After Venus Williams won her first Wimbledon title in 2000, she ran smack-dab into a hard reality: a pay gap between male and female players. Backed by the Women’s Tennis Association, she fought for—and in 2007 won—equal pay for women at Wimbledon. Today, Williams is helping women around the world fight for pay equity. Through the Privilege Tax Initiative, her fashion company, Eleven, is partnering with Credit Karma and retailers to raise funds and awareness.

“With money comes opportunity and empowerment,” Williams told Sports Illustrated in March, “and historically women have not had those opportunities. When we talk about minorities, the gaps go wider. Outside the United States, the gap goes wide open. So this is an issue facing women all over the world.”

Through participating retailers, people who are making a purchase can choose to donate $1. Proceeds benefit Girls Inc., a charity committed to inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold.

The legendary tennis champion is certainly all three.

She turned pro in 1994 at age of 14 and, just three years later, reached the U.S. Open finals. She has won seven Grand Slam titles, five Wimbledon championships, and four Olympic gold medals. Now 42, Williams continues to compete internationally. She’s also a successful entrepreneur. In addition to Eleven, she founded V Starr, a full-service commercial and residential design firm. She’s part owner and chief brand officer for Asutra, a self-care products company. And in December 2020, she launched Happy Viking, a company that makes plant-based protein powders and shakes. In 2010, Williams’ New York Times bestselling book, Come to Win, was published.

Williams talks with NAR President Leslie Rouda-Smith on Sunday, Nov. 13, 3–4 p.m. ET. In-person attendees can have their photo taken with Williams before the session. She’ll be at NAR booth 761 from noon to 1 p.m. ET.

Friday: News That’s Both Serious and Fun

Two days before Williams takes the General Session stage, Rouda Smith will host a Q&A with Carly Zakin and Danielle Weisberg. They’re co-founders and co-CEOs of theSkimm, a digital media company dedicated to succinctly giving women the information they need to make confident decisions and live smarter. The former news producers disrupted the media landscape a decade ago with the launch of theSkimm, and have built a brand that continues to be a trusted source for a community of millions. Today theSkimm ecosystem includes the Daily Skimm, Skimm Money and three top-rated podcasts: “Skimm This,” “9 to 5ish with theSkimm” and “Pop Cultured with theSkimm.” A book, How to Skimm Your Life, was released in June 2019 and debuted at #1 on The New York Times Best Seller list.

Catch the magic of theSkimm, Friday, Nov. 11, 8:45-10 a.m. ET.

Saturday: Finding Your Purpose

Are we living our lives to meet other people’s standards of success—or are we living a life of purpose? That’s the question that underlies Jay Shetty’s bestselling book, Think Like a Monk, and his popular health and wellness podcast, “On Purpose.” Podcast guests have included talent from various backgrounds, such as superstar athletes Kobe Bryant and Novak Djokovic, music icon Alicia Keys and business powerhouse Ray Dalio, among others. Shetty—both a business school graduate and a former Vedic monk—brings together science and spirituality as he shares principles and practices for health and wellness.

Put yourself on the path to wellness with Jay Shetty, Saturday, Nov. 12, 8:45–10 a.m. ET.
