Coming Full Circle

Kyle Sterling, 29, learned the value of owning real property at a young age. Sterling, his mom, and his brother lived in a three-flat apartment building in Chicago that allowed his mother to earn passive income from two rental units that helped support their family. It was his grandfather who taught the value of real estate investing, and the lesson resonated: By 24, Sterling had bought his first property and was ramping up his real estate career. He’s in it not just to amass his own portfolio but to “educate as many people as possible on how to build generational wealth through real estate.”

Sterling’s approach to educating his millennial peers is to build community and have fun. Rather than making formal presentations, he holds happy hours with music, cocktails, games and conversation. These “Get Your Funds Up Kickback” events have become “an incubator for young professionals to learn and support one another on their homeownership and wealth-building journey,” he says.

Sterling builds community outside the business, too, from holding toy drives to working with underprivileged kids at a youth camp. He
was inspired to give back early in life. “I was a beneficiary of several nonprofit organizations whose mission was to enhance the lives of young men from inner-city Chicago. I learned how to tie a tie and how to prepare for standardized tests. I wouldn’t be who I am today without their kindheartedness. Real estate has provided me the financial means to bring that impact full circle.”
