Kyle Kovats’ go-to sales methods aren’t what you’d expect from a 25-year-old. “Over 90 percent of my business comes from cold calls and going door-to-door,” he says. Kovats revels in charting his own course, questioning the value of some of the more passive sales methods popular today. “With social media, you’re kind of throwing stuff out there and hoping people come to you,” he says. Getting in front of people and making connections through conversation are what drives Kovats, who also teaches classes at a prelicensure school he owns in New Jersey. That said, he’s no technophobe: He secured his place in the 30 Under 30 class by winning the Web Choice Award, gathering the most votes among the 50 finalists by turning to Facebook, LinkedIn, and Snapchat to help spread the word about his campaign.
