Forging Her Own Path

From the time she was a baby, Katelyn Sullivan, 28, accompanied her mother to showings, open houses, closings and other appointments.

Her grandmother, who held a master’s degree in English, also worked in real estate in the 1960s and ’70s. Although Sullivan never got to see her grandmother in action, “she was one of the most intelligent and hardworking women I knew,” Sullivan says. And the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Her mother, who has worked in the industry 38 years, has grown a robust real estate business while raising three kids on her own. “It simply makes sense that I ended up in the same field as my strong and inspirational mother and grandmother,” she says.

While Sullivan works independently, she and her mom help each other once in a while at open houses. “I’m in awe of my mom’s integrity, moral compass and honesty.”

She’s making her own path by helping those with language barriers find their dream home. She spent nine months of 2018 in Latin America, where she advanced her Spanish-speaking skills. Her East Boston neighborhood has a large Latino population, so she has blended her real estate niche and language skills to work with first-time Spanish-speaking buyers. She offers free homebuying seminars in Spanish and invites a Spanish-speaking attorney and Spanish-speaking lender to join her in answering participants’ many questions. “Language should not be a constraint in the path to home equity,” she says.
