Taxes are on the rise in many parts of the country, but not everywhere. Some areas’ costs make up a lot less of annual homeownership or living costs.

Credit Karma recently identified the states with the lowest taxes, factoring in local sales tax, effective property tax rates, and income taxes. The following chart shows the states with the lowest taxes in 2022 (a lower score equals a lower overall tax rate).

On the other hand, Credit Karma noted the following are the five states with the highest overall taxes:

  1. New Jersey
  2. California
  3. New York
  4. Minnesota
  5. Vermont
