REALTORŪ Magazine Online: The real estate professional's business support tool.

Daily Real Estate News  |  May 24, 2010  |   Push Underway for Exclusive .MLS Domain
Sixteen multiple listing services have signed on as founding members of the MLS Domains Association in hopes of creating a top-level Internet domain: .MLS.

The group would make the domain available only to multiple listing services so they can distinguish themselves from other third-party listing services.

To be approved, the organization will need to file an application to obtain and manage the MLS service with the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The cost is approximately $183,000.

To demonstrate that there is industry-wide support and to cover the expense of application and setup, the organization is hoping 175 of the nation’s 900 MLSs sign on.

However, at least one MLS executive questions whether the public will make the distinction that the .MLS domain has been reserved for multiple listing services.

"The simple fact is that if we move to the .MLS, the public will continue to search in the .com environment for listings just not on our MLS websites," Cameron Paine, CEO of the Connecticut Multiple Listing Service Inc., says in a white paper on the topic.

The current founding members of the MLS Domains Association are: Arizona Regional Multiple Listing Service Inc., Austin Board of REALTORSŪ/ACTRIS, Carolina Multiple Listing Services Inc., First Multiple Listing Service Inc., Metropolitan Regional Information Systems Inc., Midwest Real Estate Data LLC, Multi Regional Multiple Listing Service, Multiple Listing Service Inc., My Florida Regional MLS, Northeast Florida Multiple Listing Service, Realcomp II Ltd., REALTORŪ Association of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Regional Multiple Listing Service of Minnesota Inc., Southern California Multiple Listing Service, TREND MLS, and Triangle Multiple Listing Service.
