Those were the days. Our members had to join associations based on the location of their office. We could raise dues as much as we liked, whenever we liked. We could tell members what they wanted and needed. We could charge huge application fees and be as rude and nasty to members as we wanted. Customer service was the last thing on our minds. Then in 1994 Board of Choice (BOC) happened, and those days were gone forever.

RCE fever peaked in 2004 as a record number of association executives obtained their Realtor association Certified Executive designation. Last year, 42 AEs and staff specialists earned their RCE. That's the highest number since 1991, the first year of the program, when 39 AEs earned the designation.

Enticed by the promise of fast, low-cost elections with greater member participation and a lower risk of human error, Realtor® associations have flocked to online voting. While many associations use very simple online ballots, others have interwoven their online election programs with political outreach, membership surveying, course evaluations, and even opt-in and opt-out e-mail subscriptions.
Nothing can derail the steady progress of managing an association like losing a staff member. Whether a worker leaves or has to be let go, personnel changes affect the entire organization. Rest assured, though, you can make these transitions quick and less painful.
Rob Guilloz, director of information services at the Ann Arbor Area Board of Realtors®, Mich., recently became familiar with the pains of transition when his association lost three members of its staff in succession, starting with the executive officer.
Fourth Annual Outstanding REALTOR® Association Web Site Contest Winners
Today's best sites dazzle the senses and deliver the goods.
This year's best association Web sites came alive with brilliant photographs and interactive menus. There was a clear trend toward incorporating moving pictures and animation in a subtle and inviting way.
Although we could choose only six winners from the nearly 90 contest entries we received, there were dozens of others that impressed the 16 AE judges (plus four NAR staff judges).
