Association Executives Committee/Board Orientation Work Group
Saturday, November 4, 2017
Chicago, IL
Meeting Summary

Work Group Purpose
Develop a kit that includes templates and sample materials that associations can use to conduct live or online orientations for members who are new to the association's board of directors. Some elements of an orientation for directors could include sample job descriptions, guidelines for relationships between staff and lay leaders, antitrust, fiduciary responsibility, budget responsibilities, and quick tips.

Background
While NAR has numerous association management resources on Realtor.org that support AEs in all aspects of their careers, AEC leadership identified a need to provide some uniform elements of a board of directors orientation to help new directors understand who they serve and to make the most of their tenure on the board.

Meeting Activity
Michele Holen, chair, asked each team to provide a brief update on the materials they submitted for inclusion in the toolkit. These materials cover the following areas in the toolkit:

  • Business Operations
  • Governance Policies/Management
  • Risk Management
  • Role of an Effective Director

As these updates were shared, the following points arose that need to be considered as the toolkit comes together:

  • Create an index and a user guide for the entire toolkit, and a user guide for the customizable powerpoint template that takes you through a board orientation
  • Include a disclaimer so that users ensure these sample guidelines comply with their state laws
  • Emphasize that users should customize the pieces in the toolkit to fit their particular association
  • Emphasize that users need to annually review their policy manual and bylaws with their incoming board members
  • Have NAR Legal review the entire toolkit before it launches on nar.realtor
  • Be sure to properly credit the materials in the toolkit

Marketing
The work group came up with the following ways to promote the toolkit:

  • AE homepage on nar.realtor
  • AE Year Round on Facebook
  • AE YPN Tips and Tricks webinar
  • Workshop session at AE Institute
  • Article in RAE Magazine
  • Presidential Briefing
  • Target new AEs via blast email or postcard
  • Work with state AEs to promote it
  • Add as a resource to RLP 100 course

Final Steps
Staff will pull a final draft of the toolkit for review by Michele Holen and Isaac Chavez (work group chair and vice chair). Once approved, staff will work with nar.realtor staff to have the toolkit on the site by early 2018.
