In 2019, NAR Leadership Academy participants will have the opportunity to learn from industry leaders through a combination of in-person events and online learning. The experience will begin in January 2019 and culminate with graduation at the 2019 REALTORS® Conference and Expo in San Francisco, California.
The 2019 schedule includes eight sessions (four in-person and four online) containing both interactive online and in-person experiences. Online sessions are self-paced and extend over a three-week period. Estimated time per online session is 3 hours or approximately 1 hour per week (excluding in-person meetings). In addition, special guests will host live online office hours to enhance session topics and answer questions. Attendance and participation for the office hours is optional, but recommended. Participants will also have exclusive access to a library of 600+ micro-videos featuring over 40 national recognized leaders in the industry.

How NAR Leads Real Estate from Washington, D.C. (Part 1)
In this session participants will be introduced to NAR’s Leadership Academy and learn its history. An overview of the class will discuss NAR Leadership Academy sessions, the class project, committee application processes, expectations/responsibilities, and class outcomes.
Participants will engage with key staff in NAR’s Washington, D.C. office to discuss how NAR leads the real estate industry from Washington, D.C. and the importance of a “members first” mentality when proposing national initiatives. Additional topics and speakers regarding NAR’s role on the Hill will be included in Session 4: How NAR Leads Real Estate in Washington, D.C. (Part 2)

This session will focus on leadership basics expected of up and coming leaders at the National Association of REALTORS®. Participants will learn about leadership styles and how best to work with others to improve the industry.
Training will also include techniques and guides designed to enhance communication skills ranging from keynote presentations to professional meetings with colleagues. Lastly, participants will engage in elements of the tactical and strategic planning NAR leaders face on a regular basis.

The National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) prides itself on advocating for home ownership and the rights of homeowners. In this session, leadership academy participants are exposed to how NAR utilizes its resources in Washington, D.C. to advocate for homeownership and REALTORS®.
Participants will have access and information to the inner workings of REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) and the REALTOR® Party; a bi-partisan political advocacy group. There will also be exposure to effective lobbying techniques and how to best represent issues concerning real estate to Congress.

This session will focus on the development of core leadership skills used by effective leaders at the association. Just hearing what was said is simply not enough; the first part of the session will focus on the development of active listening skills that aide in developing meaningful interactions with members and colleagues.
Leaders present opportunities that entice followers to join. Having a clear vision that is easily understood and demonstrating the ability to take on the vision to completion is key for any leader’s success. The second half of the session will focus on strategic planning and exceeding the expectations of those whom you are leading.

In this session leadership academy participants will learn the history of NAR’s affiliates and subsidiaries, tour the main office facilities, meet with members of the leadership team, and learn about the main functions of the NAR staff.

- Guiding a Vision from Conception to Implementation
Change is generally considered healthy and unavoidable, but leaves leadership with three options: evolve, adapt, or “die”. This session looks into effective change management at a national level, the proper use of push/pull techniques, and how to guide a vision from conception to implementation.

Everyone is unique and has their own goals and definition for success. The final session of the leadership academy focuses on next steps and future goals of each participant. After being exposed to NAR’s expectations of leadership and the internal workings of the association at the national level, each leadership academy participant will be asked to critically analyze their next steps within the association.
Important Note: The new session format is designed to provide opportunities for open dialogue rather than a lecture-style setting during the in-person meeting. Therefore, it is highly recommended that participants review all online session materials prior to the in-person date. This change allows speakers/presenters to engage NAR Leadership Academy participants at a higher level of comprehension and understanding. Come prepared to discuss and participate. All session material will remain accessible through the date of graduation as a guide and reference.
