Daily Real Estate News  |  September 24, 2010  |   NYC Cracks Down on Subpar Rentals
New York City officials reported the results of a housing investigation that checked properties listed for rent on Craigslist.

Of the 62 apartments that were offered for rent in the ads, investigators identified illegal living conditions in 54 of them. They issued vacate orders to the owners of 33 properties where they believed conditions were unsafe and fined the others.

The city has unsuccessfully tried to control illegally subdivided residences for years. But as Mayor Michael Bloomberg admitted, "A lot of people live in dangerous conditions and are breaking the law, but our ability to go after them is just very limited."
