REALTORŪ Magazine Online: The real estate professional's business support tool.

Daily Real Estate News  |  January 18, 2008  |   After 50 Years, She Still Loves Selling Real Estate
This year Dorothy Culbertson, 82, embarks on her 50th year as a top Dubuque, Iowa, real estate professional.

Culbertson, broker associate with Brissey Realty, was newly divorced in 1958 and expecting her fifth child when she quit her waitress job and earned her real estate license.

A local broker/owner took a chance on her and gave her a job at $75 a week. She was one of only a handful of women real estate practitioners in the state, but it proved to be a good move.

The Dubuque Board of REALTORSŪ recently named her REALTORŪ of the Year for 2007, an honor bestowed upon her previously in 1992.

Terry Duggan, broker/owner of Duggan Iowa Realty and past president of the Dubuque Board of REALTORSŪ, personally salutes Culbertson.

"Dorothy, I would say, gave just about every REALTORŪ in the area their start," he says.

Culbertson continues to serve on the board of directors of the Iowa Association of REALTORSŪ, and she doesn’t see herself retiring anytime soon because she loves what she does.

"People do need a roof over their head," she says. "Having the thrill of getting a family into their first home and making lifetime friends out of them, that's wonderful."
