Housing Opportunity Program

Iowa City was recognized as one of six 2006 Ambassador for Cities for their Homeownership for Certification Mortgage Readiness Program. The Ambassadors for Cities Program recognizes successful partnerships between Realtors® and their Mayor, which result in more affordable and available housing to people who want to join the American dream of homeownership. The Iowa City Area Association of Realtors® not only has a successful partnership with the Mayors office, but also demonstrated in a very short period of time they could start a new initiative and make affordable housing available to residents who feel they cannot or do not know what steps to take to purchase a home.

Beginning in February 2006, a local coalition consisting of the Realtors® Association, nonprofits and local government entities reached out to renters so they could become mortgage ready. 63 people passed an eight hour mortgage readiness course. As of June 19, four course graduates have qualified and moved in to a new home with four additional graduates moving in to a new home by the end of July.

On Monday, June 19, 2006 a celebration event was held at Chauncey Swan Park. Representatives from NAR and the US Conference of Mayors presented ICAR President Tim Lehman and Mayor Ross Wilburn with a plaque recognizing them as a 2006 Ambassador City.
