Policy Summary

Professional Standards Policy Statement #49, Professional standards administration training, in the NAR Code of Ethics and Arbitration Manual, provides as follows:

49. Professional standards administration training

Enforcement of the Code of Ethics is a privilege and responsibility of each Board and Association as established in Article IV of the Bylaws of the National Association of REALTORS®. Every Board and Association must designate a person or entity responsible for administration of professional standards processes. Persons primarily responsible for administration of professional standards processes must successfully complete training every four (4) years on professional standards administration meeting the learning objectives and minimum criteria established by the National Association of REALTORS® from time to time. (Revised 11/14)

Each Board/Association is required to designate a person or entity which is responsible for the administration of the Professional Standards process (which includes the processing of ethics, arbitration and mediation matters under the Code of Ethics) for the Board/Association. If the Board/Association designates an entity such as a Regional Professional Standards Committee, State Association or other entity under a Cooperative Enforcement Agreement, that entity must designate a person who is responsible for the administration of Professional Standards matters. The person so designated shall be known as the "Administrator."

The administrator is required to successfully complete a course on Professional Standards administration which meets the learning objectives and minimum criteria as established by the National Association of REALTORS® from time to time.

Staff primarily responsible for administration of professional standards processes must successfully complete training consistent with Professional Standards Policy Statement #49. If staff has not successfully completed such training, they must do so before becoming primarily responsible for the administration of professional standards processes. If staff has previously completed such training, they have until December 31, 2018 to complete another training. Once staff completes their training, they have four years from that specific date to complete their next training.
